The attack is very quick: when blown softly it produces a gentle, embracing tone, and when you blow firmly it brings out a strong, focused sound that projects well on stage, offering a very wide expressive and dynamic range. The middle–low register is especially stable and does not break easily even with a generous amount of air, making it well-suited for honkyoku as well as contemporary pieces that emphasize the lower tones. In the upper register the overtones ring beautifully, with a bright, clear sound that stands out nicely in ensemble settings.
